Job Description
Patient Assessment and Triage
- Finds actual and potential risk to patients and others and minimizes or eliminates risk and maximizes safety.
- Prepare for the arrival of patients to the surgery center by making sure that all required documentation and testing are complete.
- Review patient charts for health history, make sure permission has been given for surgery. Ensure all cardiac and lab documentation necessary is available for Anesthesia to review on time.
Medical Interventions
- Assists in admitting and recovery rooms, including making post-op calls, performing pre-surgical assessments, and documenting in the electronic health record.
- Inserts and maintains peripheral IV lines, administers pain and anxiolytic medications, and monitors for complications.
- Escorts patients safely to the operating room and provides thorough handoffs to the receiving nursing team, while being prepared for emergencies by knowing procedures and emergency cart locations.
Collaboration and Communication
- Collaborates with the healthcare team to coordinate surgery schedules, ensure patient care continuity, and communicate important patient information such as allergies and surgical risks.
- Provides clear education and support to patients and caregivers about the surgical process, answering questions and updating them throughout surgery.
- Maintains professionalism, pursues ongoing education to meet state requirements, and stays current with healthcare practices.
Documentation and Record-Keeping
- Reviews surgery charts and makes daily pre-op phone calls while maintaining a positive and caring attitude with patients, physicians, and staff.
- Documents patient care and instructions accurately, ensures preparation for the next day’s cases, and performs related administrative duties.
- Stocks medical supplies and prepares safety equipment in patient rooms to support smooth operations.

Certifications and Experience
- Minimum requirements include graduation from an accredited school of nursing. BSN required, MSN preferred
- 2 years of experience working in the perioperative setting (pre-operative department, post anesthesia care unit, operating room, interventional radiology, etc.)
- Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) documentation
- Current unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
- BLS, ACLS, and PALS certified
- Ability to teach patients and families
- Excellent communication skills
- Working knowledge of nursing theory, practice, and legal elements of nursing
- Critical thinking/problem solving skills
- Ability to work in a self-directed environment
- Demonstrate ability to immediately recognize and institute treatment for the following emergency/life threatening situations: cardiac arrhythmias, cardiac arrest, airway obstruction, respiratory arrest, hemorrhage, vagal response, syncope, shock, toxic overdose of local anesthesia, hypertension, hypotension, and malignant hyperthermia
- Must be able to communicate effectively and collaborate compatibly with all physicians and staff.
- Strong organizational skills, diligence, and a clear understanding of the importance of professional etiquette through phone calls and email correspondence.
